CBDT Extends ITR Filing Due Date for AY 2025-26 Till September 16

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has announced a further extension in the due date for filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for Assessment Year 2025-26.

Originally, the last date to file ITRs was July 31, 2025, which was earlier extended to September 15, 2025. Now, CBDT has given taxpayers one more day, extending the deadline to September 16, 2025.

In its official press release issued today, the Ministry of Finance clarified that this extension applies to taxpayers who were required to file their ITRs by July 31, 2025. The board stated that a formal order or notification regarding this extension will be issued separately.

This move is expected to provide relief to lakhs of taxpayers who were struggling to meet the deadline due to last-minute technical issues or other challenges.

Key Points:

Original due date: July 31, 2025

First extension: September 15, 2025

Latest extension: September 16, 2025

Tax experts suggest that taxpayers should make use of this additional day and avoid waiting till the last moment to file their returns.
